All I can do is laugh at this one. I'm not upset. It was completely out of my control. I was feeling great (cardiovascular-wise), and I was on 1:08 pace through 9 miles. Then, disaster struck. I experienced GI issues like I never have. I had to stop in multiple port-a-potties (I spent over 6 minutes in them), and I should have stopped in several more (but they were only located at the mile markers). Because I needed several more, this resulted in my needing to immediately change my shorts after the race. Sorry, way TMI. It was just that kind of day.
Cardio I felt great, and I was right with Steve when it struck. My GI issues had been building the entire race, but I hoped it wouldn't become an issue. I hoped in vain. Not sure why this happened. I haven't felt settled GI-wise for much of the week, but I certainly didn't expect this.
I'm not concerned, and I'm not upset. I don't have a history of this, so I'll just brush it off. Definitely out of my control. After my second toilet stop, I strongly considered just dropping out, but I decided not to for 2 reasons: 1) out of principle, 2) I knew I'd have family cheering for me at the end. I'm actually surprised I broke 1:20.
Strong performances today by many. I think the race of the day goes to Fritz; another incredible, gutsy performance. Hasn't he just been back to running for a week?
