I had no business racing a 5k today, but I did it anyway. I'm recovering from injury, I recently took 2 months off from running, and I've done no speed. Essentially, this was off the couch. I know, I know -- my intelligence can be questioned by my decision to race today. But, I just had to do it. Brandon did the "Inception" trick to me last week and planted this 5k idea in my head.

My watch time said 16:25, but the results say 16:30 (not sure why the difference, but it doesn't matter). A bit of a headwind the whole time. My garmin said 3.2 miles (but we all know that means nothing). First mile was 5:21 and I was in a pack of 4. For some reason, the pace felt way too slow. I was practically running into their backs (I decided to stay right behind them). I was tempted to pass them many times, but I held back. After the first mile, I couldn't deal with it anymore. I made a move, and this dropped 2 of the runners. Trevor Baker stayed right with me, and he looked great. 2nd mile was 5:09. Then, Trevor made a strong move. I tried but couldn't cover it. What can I say -- I'm a wuss :) My third mile was another 5:09, and Trevor's was 4:57. That was the race. Trevor was strong and impressive and deserved the win. Thanks, Scott and Mike, for cheering at the end.

Even more fun than racing was experiencing the pre- and post-race with Brandon (drive to the race, warm-up, warm-down, etc). What an awesome friend. Thanks for planting this seed in my mind, Brandon.

Nice run today! I didn't realize how off the couch that was!

I had a blast today. Thanks so much for humoring me and making a day of it. It made it so much better to have you there, now if I just had some of your speed. Your off the couch and mine are much different haha, I need a new couch :).

You ran a great race today and I'm excited for you moving forward. We're going to have a lot of fun this year.

Great race for off the couch! Also, thanks for answering all those questions afterwards. I'm sure I'll have more. I've met so many doctors that are now glad to have the pay check but would never do it over again etc. I'm impressed with your passion for your career as well as your family.

Brandon, you can have my couch. I need to get off it more :)

Trevor, you can ask me questions any time. No topic is off limits. Although medical school, residency, and fellowship were brutal beyond description, I really would do it again. I absolutely love orthopedic sports medicine. It is definitely a passion. I'm weird, I know :) I mainly do knees, shoulders, and fractures, and I love it. If I didn't have a passion for it, it definitely would not have been worth it.

Great job again today!

Solid, Matt. Good to see you back out racing.

Hey, you're officially off the couch now!

Matt I know it wasn't your best performance. But honestly it is good to see you out racing again brother. Hope all is well with the hamstrings!

Great effort on the race. You are tough as nails--those of us that run with you know how tough you really are. Take care of those hamstrings--I'm looking forward to some great performances from you this year! Hat's off my friend!

From runningafterbabies on Sun, May 05, 2013 at 15:39:44 from 208.54.5.150

And one more thing...those 5 sec do matter! At least they do to me. I am glad that others noticed the timing issues as well.

From Rachelle on Mon, May 06, 2013 at 10:23:02 from 159.212.71.77

Not to shabby for "off the couch" Matt! Awesome pacing and great race.

From Matt Poulsen on Sun, May 26, 2013 at 08:55:19 from 98.202.242.213

Thanks everyone! Much appreciated.

I totally agree, Melody. 5 seconds absolutely do matter! This one didn't bother me, however, because I wasn't anywhere near peak performance. Had I been, though, I would have definitely been upset.
