I had no business racing a 5k today, but I did it anyway. I'm recovering from injury, I recently took 2 months off from running, and I've done no speed. Essentially, this was off the couch. I know, I know -- my intelligence can be questioned by my decision to race today. But, I just had to do it. Brandon did the "Inception" trick to me last week and planted this 5k idea in my head. My watch time said 16:25, but the results say 16:30 (not sure why the difference, but it doesn't matter). A bit of a headwind the whole time. My garmin said 3.2 miles (but we all know that means nothing). First mile was 5:21 and I was in a pack of 4. For some reason, the pace felt way too slow. I was practically running into their backs (I decided to stay right behind them). I was tempted to pass them many times, but I held back. After the first mile, I couldn't deal with it anymore. I made a move, and this dropped 2 of the runners. Trevor Baker stayed right with me, and he looked great. 2nd mile was 5:09. Then, Trevor made a strong move. I tried but couldn't cover it. What can I say -- I'm a wuss :) My third mile was another 5:09, and Trevor's was 4:57. That was the race. Trevor was strong and impressive and deserved the win. Thanks, Scott and Mike, for cheering at the end.
Even more fun than racing was experiencing the pre- and post-race with Brandon (drive to the race, warm-up, warm-down, etc). What an awesome friend. Thanks for planting this seed in my mind, Brandon.

AM: 16 miles with Scott from my home (out-and-back, 4 miles of it were in AF canyon [2 up, 2 down]). 8 mile warm-up (uphill), then 4 miles in 20:49 (5:12 average) (5:15, 5:02, 5:15, 5:17; the first 2 miles were quite aided). Felt great. Excellent run and conversation with the main man, Scott.

| AM: 20 easy, rainy, soaking-wet miles up and down Provo Canyon with Mike and Brandon. Brandon wisely cut the run short and did 12 miles (he's been sick). Cold up South-Fork, but gradually warmed up on the way down. Did 8 miles at ~ 6:00 pace on the way down. Felt great -- just enough to get the heart beating comfortably. Great run, and even better company. When I got home, I discovered I had some major chaffing in areas I'd never had before (because of the rain). I won't expound.... :) Needless to say, showering is brutal. PM: Upper body weights.

| AM: 5am track workout at Lone Peak High School with Mike, Scott, and Reed. My goal was just to wet the appetite and not over-do it, as this was my first track workout in quite awhile. 4 mile warm-up, then 3 x 800m at 2:28, 2:24, 2:25, then 2 x 400m at 68, 68. Nice and relaxed, but it did hurt (I'm not used to this pace). 1 lap jog in between intervals. Mike was on fire -- even had a 2:16 800m and a 59s 400m! Scott looked great for having just won the Ogden 1/2 marathon. Reed is progressing well -- if he sticks with this speed thing, he could become deadly.

Crazy last few weeks for me. Insanely busy. Haven't been able to do the blog thing for a few weeks. Excited to do it again.
AM: 20 miles from Reed's home (up and down AF canyon) with Walter, Mike, Spencer, Reed, and Chris. 10 miles of it were in AF canyon (5 up, 5 down). Easy 10 miles uphill, then Mike, Walter, and I did a 7-mile tempo. I did a 5:24 average (5:39, 5:13, 5:28, 5:24, 5:19, 5:20, 5:29; the first 5 miles were quite aided). An intentional slower, easing-into-it first mile. Ended with a 3 mile warm-down. Felt strong. My legs are sore (not used to the downhill). I've got a long way to go, but I finally feel like I'm starting to get in shape. PM: Upper body and hamstring weights.
