Met a large crew in Orem. Ran up and down Provo canyon. Most guys did 10 miles. Because I will be out of town this weekend, I decided I'd better get my long run in today. Brandon was kind enough to join me. 10 easy miles up the canyon. Then did a 9-mile tempo down the canyon at 5:28 average [5:26, 5:19, 5:29, 5:30, 5:24, 5:27, 5:31, 5:30, 5:37 (uphill)]. Just went by feel. Felt great, but I can still feel the race in my legs (no surprise). Brandon ran an excellent tempo. He is an animal, and is really improving!

Solid work with nice weekly mileage going and a race last Saturday. It's good to see your legs can respond like this under these circumstances. You are heading for sub-2:25 at St. George my friend...believe it!

Thanks again Matt! It was a great morning as usual. Have a safe trip.

Nicely done!!! I say 2:21 or faster the way you are running. Compare your fast half to other runners' fast halves going into St. George.. Your on pace for that, or even a little ahead. I don't know that anyone is going to catch Bryant Jensen, but I do think you'll be in the mix up front. It's awesome to see all the bloggers that are running so well right now. Going to be an amazing race! Keep the great preparation!

Trevor may be right. I plugged your Hobble time into the race time predictor on the blog here (as you can tell, I'm quite bored today at work) and it spit out a 2:20:36 St George (2:25:42 TOU, 2:26:49 for Ogden and Des News...UVM has changed course I think since this predictor so you can't really put much stock in that one).

I didn't realize it projected such faster times for St George than other Utah marathons.

As far as other halves go:

The predictor spits out the same time for Bryce Canyon (1:06:02...these are the two fastest halves listed)

1:07:58 for TOU half

1:08:40 for Provo River

1:10:14 for Strider's half (but that one really depends on the weather a lot; I don't agree with this. I think 1:06 at Hobble is at least 1:09 at Strider's with no blizzard)

1:09:53 for a flat SLC half

So, there you go! 2:20 for Matt at St. George. I think you can do it; I mean you have been improving by leaps and bounds lately! I don't see that stopping.

As for Bryant, his Strider's half time predicts a 2:15 St George, while his Ogden marathon predicts a high 2:16. But he's getting married next month and we'll see how well he keeps up his training through wedding planning and a honeymoon.

I somewhat believe the calculator for "endurance" guys like Bryant and Fritz. For "speed" guys like me though, it overpredicts my marathon when basing it on my half times. Matt probably falls in closer to the endurance end of the spectrum than speed, so 2:20 is definitely possible. I mean compare Keate's Hobble last year and his 2:22 St George to your Hobble this year!

Sorry for the rambling...This was fun though.

Haha awesome! I was actually telling Matt about the predictor on the run this morning. Times were part of our conversation. Definitely fun stuff :).

Haha, Riley, I love how you analyze stuff too.. It's like all I do in my spare time at work or school. I've played around with the predictor on here before, but I don't think it's necessarily always up to snuff. I like how you mentioned the difference between endurance guys and speed guys too. I wouldn't be surprised to see you run a crazy fast marathon time too. Unfortunately I don't think I have the time to get in shape in time for St. George this year, but I'll be giving it a real shot next year. Count me in on the madness. haha.

Awesome workout Matt! These type of LR with hard tempos in the middle are the bread and butter of marathon training. I'm stoked to watch you crush SGM!

Thanks everyone! Very interesting analysis. I appreciate your encouragement. I'm excited for everyone on the blog's fall marathons.
