AM:  12 miles at the Olympic Oval in Kearns with Jake, Andrea, Scott, Mike, Toni, Collin, Kevin, and Kramer & his high school teammates. Was a lot of fun. Warmed-up and warmed-down 4 miles each. Then, did 20-minute tempo run. I have no idea the distance, but it was likely just under 4 miles. The others did mile repeats. Given my race next weekend, I decided to stick with my plan for tempo and not risk anything with faster repeats (since I haven't done fast stuff yet). It was sure tempting to go with them though. I started my first mile with them. I came through at 5:11, and I have no idea what the pace was after that. My guess is that I kept about 5:15 pace average for 20 minutes. There was a mass of humanity of joggers on the track, which required a lot of weaving around them. I made a lot of people mad and had a lot of people cussing at me as I yelled at them to move to the outer lanes. Also, there were barricades blocking off many of the lanes at several points around the track because of a multi-country speed skating competition going on. Not ideal conditions for tempo, but still fun and still a good workout. Everyone looked great. Jake ran effortlessly. And the story of the day is that Scott is back! He looked great and was back to his animal self!

Nice work Matt. It's nice to see that I wasn't the only one forced to take a good workout indoors. You're ready for a good one next week!

From Bam on Sat, Jan 12, 2013 at 12:23:19 from 89.126.28.24

The sagacity of the man. I think the tempo was a prudent/shrewd move Matt. Keeps the confidence high and you've dropped in a strong session without over-stressing your system.

What race are you doing next week?

From Matt Poulsen on Sat, Jan 12, 2013 at 12:30:52 from 98.202.242.213

Riley: Yeah, an indoor run was definitely the best option today. That was a serious storm. The roads are brutal, but you got more snow than we did in Lehi. You are also ready to pop one next weekend Riley. It will be great to see you there.

Bam: Thanks. It was a good workout today. I didn't expend too much effort, and I'm glad I didn't do the shorter intervals. I'm doing the St. George 1/2 marathon next weekend. I'm excited.

I'm glad you stuck to your plan and did the tempo. That was probably a perfect effort before next weekend. You know you are ready!

Great workout Matt. You will go under 1:12 for sure. Glad to hear Scott is back. That's a great turn out today. Look forward to a good workout at the St. George Half Marathon. Should be a great field. Love everyones confidence right now. Very Motivating.

From Andrea on Sat, Jan 12, 2013 at 12:49:00 from 67.177.11.154

Great workout Matt! You looked very strong and smooth during the tempo.

Great job Matt. All of this training will payoff next weekend.

Thanks guys. We definitely need to keep doing these group runs. And welcome to the blog, Spencer! Somehow I missed that you were on the blog. Great to have you, and even better training with you.

Great job today. I know it was super tempting to do the mile repeats. You have been very wise in your approach to this season and it is going to pay off big time. I've got selfish motivations for you to stay healthy--I'm excited to have a running partner who will kick my trash!

From SpencerSimpson on Sat, Jan 12, 2013 at 13:28:26 from 166.137.210.21

Scott. Remember until someoneinthegroup beats you, you are still the rabbit. No pressure! Great work again to all. Jake, hope you win it bro. Sub 1:05 on that course is world class. Excited to see the results.

You haven't lived until you've yelled, "track!" to someone and get glared at. Great job getting a nice tempo effort in crazy crowded conditions. I don't think the BYU track is ever that crowded, and the patrons all seem know what TRACK! means.

From Matt Poulsen on Sat, Jan 12, 2013 at 15:53:34 from 98.202.242.213

I agree Scott -- it will be a blast to help each other get to the next level.

Great week of training Melody! Yeah, I get feisty when I'm going fast on a track and others are in the way, but I'm sure we all do.

Great workout Matt. Smart to stick with the tempo.

I'm sure there are dozens of hobby joggers talking about that jerk that was shouting at everyone to clear lane 1 while he flew by.

You're going to have a great race Saturday!
