3:30 am, 20 miles.

I'm sure glad this one is done. I'm going to be in Chicago this weekend at a conference, so I decided to do my long run today, since I won't be able to the rest of the week. Did 10 easy miles on the Murdock Canal Trail in Orem. Then met Brandon, Reed, Toni, and Karl, and run up and down Provo Canyon (10 miles).  Did 2.5 mile warm-up (so I was at 12.5 miles for the day), then ran 7 miles at tempo effort, but my times were certainly nothing to write home about. I ran between 5:45-6:10 pace (2.5 miles were up Provo Canyon, the rest were down; the miles above 6 min pace were going up the canyon). I had hoped to run faster, and I felt great cardiovascular-wise, but I felt depleted (energy-wise), dehydrated, and hot (it was warm for this early in the morning). I know, no excuses. I'm actually very pleased with the run. Good effort, and I got my long run done. Thanks to the crew for helping me get it done. Brandon, Reed, Toni, and Karl all looked great as they picked up the pace.

Great effort this morning Matt. You have a very good week going.

Nice work! sometimes 330 is what you gotta do.

I wouldn't worry about the splits on the tempo - even if you are used to running at 5am everyday, 20 miles at 3:30 is a different world. The body just isn't used to going hard that early.

Enjoy sea-level this weekend!

Yoda, I have a Dr's appointment scheduled for you on Monday to do a CT scan on your head. This means you woke up @2:30am to get ready and then decided to do a 20 mile run 1/2 on your own. You have serious guts my man! Love it! Great example for determination and will power. You are going to do some fun PR's here on out.

It was fun to run with you before you decided to smoke us all back to the park :). I love this! I seriously started laughing this morning when i pulled in at 4:50 and your car was sitting there empty. Animal.

Hat's off to the Doctor! This one doesn't quite match your 20 mile run in the inversion at 3:30 AM before hunting all day with your family, but it's close. Thanks for continuing to raise the bar for us. Nicely done!

Thanks friends. I fully admit that I'm crazy. But I'm Ok with it :) But with my job, sometimes this is my only option. And, as you all know, if you want to run at a certain level, you have to pay the price.

Yeah, I definitely was not feeling it during the tempo. It was a bit frustrating, but it just wasn't there. However, I know it was just the circumstances of the morning. Good point, Jake -- systems aren't ready to kill it in the middle of the night (I hadn't thought of that). Also, I felt really good the first 10 miles, so my easy pace naturally went to 6:50 pace. That probably just contributed to my energy depletion later. Also, one obvious factor is lack of sleep. I haven't had much lately; I certainly need more.
