Congratulations to so many FRB-ers today!

I ran a PR, but that's the only positive for me today. Not a good race for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm thankful for a PR; but I'm definitely not happy with my race. I have no answers or excuses. I am frustrated and at a loss. I feel I did everything right in my preparation for this race. My legs simply did not have it today. They were thrashed, even early on. My calves were already sore after 3 miles, and I hoped that would be no big deal. I was wrong. By mile 9, my legs were done; thrashed and destroyed. I have no idea why. I was in survival mode the rest of the race. I tried, numerous times, to mentally will my legs to go faster. But to no avail -- it was not possible today. It felt like a piece of cake cardiovascular-wise the entire time; my legs were just thrashed and didn't have it.

I ran with Zak, Jon Kotter, and Iain Hunter for the first 7 miles. Our splits were conservative, but they felt significantly more difficult than they should have. I knew something was wrong. I ran a 5:53 up Veyo (which is actually a decent pace), but Zak, Jon, and Iain gapped me by ~ 10 seconds. I quickly decided that I needed to stay with them to accomplish what I wanted to. So, I caught them during the next mile. I then stayed with them for the next couple miles, but then it was over for me. I kept thinking I could keep it together and take it mile-by-mile, and I sure tried, but such was not the case. My legs simpliy didn't have it today (calves and hamstrings).

I was still in the top ten after the half, but a lot of guys passed me during the 2nd half. The screaming downhills around miles 14-18, that should have been close to 5-flat miles for me, were 5:30's and 5:40's. Something was definitley wrong.

My splits:  5:37, 5:39, 5:16, 5:12, 5:22, 5:21, 5:20, 5:53, 5:40, 5:27, 5:45, 5:40, 5:34, 5:47, 5:31, 5:28, 5:30, 5:35, 5:49, 5:51, 5:40, 5:56, 5:54, 6:06, 6:16, 6:24

1st half: 1:12:21, 2nd half: 1:16:24.  Ouch!

Currently, my legs are more thrashed than I think they've ever been. My calves are a disaster (and my left hamstring is horrible). I'm guessing I altered my stride because of my calves, which aggravated my hamstring terribly (my hamstring would not let me lengthen my stride during the last 5 miles). I'll need to be very careful during my recovery.

It's tough when you don't have answers. It makes it difficult to know what to change. For now, I won't change anything. I know I'm in much better shape than what I showed today.

This much is clear:  you ain't seen the last of me yet.

Certainly you are not even close to being done. Sometimes mysteriously the legs just don't have it. I know you will recover wisely and come back even stronger. Congrats on a PR regardless.

Matt, Still a great time.. and it's only one marathon. If the past is any indicator you'll have some incredible ones ahead of you.

From SpencerSimpson on Sat, Oct 05, 2013 at 16:07:10 from 50.73.45.89

understandable feelings. You definitely trained for sub 2:20. I love the learning experience though. So much more to come from ya brotha. Love the year you have had all things considering! Great Effort today. More carnage to come...Make It Happen...

From Dave Taylor on Sat, Oct 05, 2013 at 21:02:31 from 174.23.73.8

Dude, your race sounds like mine, except way faster and more hammy trouble. You will make it happen, no doubt.

From Holt on Sat, Oct 05, 2013 at 21:03:34 from 67.2.227.78

I've had numerous races where the same feeling is there... And nothing really makes it better for awhile. Keep pushing hard and big things will happen.

Nice to meet you in person.

From JPark on Sun, Oct 06, 2013 at 00:01:40 from 50.160.19.124

I think everyone will agree, we've barely seen the beginning of you!... The best is undoubtably yet to come. As the others have said, its only one race. Sometimes its just not your day and that's okay. You've clearly got the will, talent, fitness, and know-how for much, much faster and the results will come. Rest up and take care of the hammy. Concentrate on all the great things you've accomplished these last few months.

From Jon on Sun, Oct 06, 2013 at 07:14:02 from 107.203.52.135

Definitely had that feeling before, where a PR is an underperformance- you'll bounce back stronger than ever. Just relax, recover, then get at it again.

From Josh E on Sun, Oct 06, 2013 at 11:04:07 from 64.17.87.27

Sorry it didn't go according to plan but it's progress. I am sure you will come back even stronger and have a huge breakthrough.

From Fritz on Sun, Oct 06, 2013 at 12:24:37 from 50.198.178.113

This is a head scratcher and I am sorry the race did go as planned. But nothing can take away the fact that you hammered out hundreds and hundreds of quality miles and workouts that will set you up for that huge breakthrough you are destined to have.

I will probably remember the build and fun workouts we had more than I will the race. Thanks for taking me on the ride.

From scottkeate on Sun, Oct 06, 2013 at 15:42:53 from 98.202.116.66

Such a gusty race, which is what we all expected. None of us that has run with you would have expected the day to go as it did--definitely something not 100% in the body. Maybe too much ice cream :-)

Let's get the body recovered and keep the early-morning routine in place. You've got too big a fire burning and too much potential to let this one blip on the radar do anything more that stoke the flames for the next opportunity.

I appreciate your personal accountability and no-nonsense, no-excuses approach to running. I appreciate the fact that I get to train with one of the toughest competitors I've ever met.

From Matt Schreiber on Sun, Oct 06, 2013 at 15:57:46 from 66.17.102.185

Great job on the PR Matt. You're super fit, and we all know it. It's such a bummer when you know you're capable/ready for more but the stars just don't align. I hope your recovery goes as planned - much needed after that race. Again, congrats on the PR. Next time you'll cruise past this one!

From Jeff L on Sun, Oct 06, 2013 at 16:11:35 from 97.117.14.198

Nice race, Matt, despite not being what you wanted/expected.

From Jake K on Sun, Oct 06, 2013 at 20:50:38 from 67.177.11.154

Uh man I feel for ya, Matt. Its not like 2:28 is "bad" but everyone (especially you) knew you were capable of throwing down with anyone. The big breakthrough will come - the training wasn't an illusion - this marathon just didn't reflect your fitness. This race can be a mystery.

Stay positive - recover, make sure all the pieces of the engine are healed up, then set a new goal. The great thing about this sport is that you always get another chance. And when it comes together, its gonna be special.

From mike⇒nelson on Sun, Oct 06, 2013 at 21:40:58 from 98.202.168.196

Sorry about the disappointing race. Great attitude. You are in amazing shape. It'll come, there's no doubt.

You've had some great performances this year and many, many more to come!

From RileyCook on Sun, Oct 06, 2013 at 22:08:06 from 174.52.234.49

There's not much else to say that others haven't already said. You know your fitness and this race didn't reflect what you've earned.

It's frustrating and it will take awhile to get over, but use it as fuel going forward. You will see sub-2:20.

Thanks for being such a great voice here on the blog. Keep your head up and don't change much. Your training seems pretty spot on to me.

From Rachelle on Mon, Oct 07, 2013 at 09:30:56 from 159.212.71.199

It is frustrating to not run what you know you are capable of. However fighting like you did despite not having it physically only further proves how strong you really are. You are the strongest mental runner I know and truly a fantastic example to me.

Take time off to recover. These hard races take more out of us than we like to admit. I know you'll be back stronger than ever and when it happens for you it will be magical.

From Brandon on Mon, Oct 07, 2013 at 10:05:38 from 67.214.231.170

Matt I know you were very well prepared for a KO race. I'm sorry it didn't go according to plan but... :) and I type this with a smile on my face - because I know you I know the fuel that this will add to the fire that so many of us gravitate to. You are a fierce competitor and it's only a matter of time before it all comes together. Thank you for helping me to believe in myself. I too am very fortunate to be able to train with one of the very best people that I know. Rest up, chin up! We've got work to do and fun times coming!

From Andrea on Tue, Oct 08, 2013 at 09:20:01 from 72.37.171.52

It's tough to have races like this when you underperform what you know you were capable of. It happens to all of us. You got in a very solid training cycle that will propel you closer to where you want to be in the marathon. Now, keep that fire burning and get healed up!

From Matt Poulsen on Thu, Oct 10, 2013 at 22:01:31 from 174.52.216.185

Thanks, everyone. Much appreciated.

From Jason D on Fri, Oct 11, 2013 at 17:35:07 from 50.172.60.35

I understand the PR/still disappointed. It's a sub2:30 marathon, but of course you are right about your fitness ( I predicted your recent half x 2 + 8-9 minutes I think). Not much to be done when the legs lock up. Hats off to you for fighting it the whole way. I have no doubt we will see more from you in the future. I hope so. I need good running reading material!
