Just a so-so race for me. I feel like I'm in better shape than last year, so I expected a better time today than I ran last year. It wasn't to be. I didn't feel great today. Still tried to hang in there, and ran Ok. I was with Brett Hales and Jason Holt for ~ 3 miles, and then I fell back. I ran the rest of the race solo, which is always difficult. Brett ran an incredible 1:03:33 for the win. He is a half-marathon monster. Jason took 2nd and ran a 1:06:40; he had a good race. Rounding out the top 5, Jacob Howell was 4th (1:08:32), and Mike Nelson took 5th (1:08:40). Other great performances by many!

I've had some good marathon-specific workouts lately. I still feel I'm getting in good marathon shape. But, apparently, these workouts haven't translated into half-marathon shape :) I'm not thrilled about that, but I'm Ok with it.  I've got work to do.

Part of it is that you are running with a group of the best half marathoners in the country every race. You'd be cleaning up at any race every weekend somewhere else. Good run!

Nice race Matt. Maybe all those workouts/having marathon training legs had something to do with it. Was your calf still bothering you? Did it measure short again this year?

Great work Matt. Running solo is incredibly hard and you may have burnt yourself out a bit starting out with Brett and Jason? Regardless you still performed well and at the end of the day this is just a building block towards your goal race.

3rd place in such a competitive field is pretty darn good. But, I do understand the desire to improve upon your time from last year. If you had to choose though between running faster at Hobble Creek and running faster at STG wouldn't you choose STG? It sounds like that is where your training is taking you so I'm sure you're right on track!

Awesome job! 2:22 or faster coming for STG.

From Bam on Thu, Aug 21, 2014 at 04:54:59 from 89.126.28.24

What's up Doc? Hope you are well.

Just thought I'd dive in with a cheeky little comment:

Trust your training. Your training is predominantly tuned into the marathon and because of that you shouldn't necessarily be running well over the half and shorter distances. Look how Paul was running (relatively speaking) before he ran 2:17.

Some people do run well over the shorter distances but they probably wouldn't be doing the marathon sessions you are doing. You are training your body to burn fuel in and around mp, which is bang on. The Half and shorter, as you well know, requires different energy systems.

Long story short, if I were you, I'd be very happy with your race: it bodes very well for the marathon. Just remember the taper stuff: antioxidants etc...

:) xx

Tough when faced with a really fast time from last year, Matt. I liked what Coach Bam had to say (he's right of course).

From RileyCook on Sat, Aug 23, 2014 at 13:54:20 from 73.52.134.194

Chalk it up to an off-day and keep it rolling to STG. You are in position to really do well down there.

Nice job Matt. That's a stellar finish against some stiff competition. I can't wait to join you guys in the UC for some STG long runs.

All: thanks for your pearls of wisdom. They are very helpful. Josh: my calf was fine (thankfully), and yes: the course still measured ~ .15 short :) Steve S.: my thoughts exactly! Thanks, guys.
