Back-to-back 1/2 marathons? What was I thinking? Sometimes my intelligence can be questioned. And today might be one of those days.  But that's Ok. I had fun anyway.

I contacted the race director multiple times to see if he would let Mike and I into the race.  I didn't even decide to do this race until 2 days ago.  My legs were too thrashed, but then they somewhat turned the corner on Thursday.  The race director told me to take a hike -- "We are sold out," he kept saying. "We need to treat everyone fairly; no exceptions." Whatever. Oh well -- Mike and I decided to bandit the race, and it was a blast. And, I enjoyed drinking the Gatorade during the race and eating the food at the end of the race :)

I PR'd, but there's a definite asterisk for this one (boy is it aided). It was sure fun though. I felt very strong and comfortable. Didn't hurt that much (cardiovascular-wise). But my legs sure were telling me I did a 1/2 marathon a week ago. My plan was to go by feel, be conservative, and see what happened. I firmly decided beforehand I was not going to go out in sub-5 pace with the leaders. That will be for another day.

Ran the first ~ 9 miles with Mike and Nate (a strong runner and 2:28 marathoner from Idaho). Pace was conversational, and we actually talked a lot -- which is always fun during a race (maybe this means I wasn't going hard enough? -- actually it was plenty for me today). Nate made a strong and calculated move at mile 8.5, and I knew I couldn't quite cover it today. He put a minute on me during the final 4.5 miles.

Mike fell back a bit, but he ran an amazing race! Very impressive. Great things in store for him. I finished strong (I felt strong the whole way). I finished feeling like I had a lot left in the tank. Not ideal, if you think about just one individual race, but this was perfect for me today. With my race last week, this was plenty.

Zack and Scott ran very well! Their first 10 miles were sub-5 pace! It was fun to watch them pull away. Walter ran the race of the day! Absolutely incredible and inspiring! He just ran a marathon last week. I kept thinking he would come back to me, but he kept extending his lead. He eventually did come back to me, but it took me a long time to catch him. Animal!

Overall, a fun day. No racing for me for awhile.

My splits:  5:05, 5:14, 5:16, 5:04, 5:04, 5:08, 5:13, 5:11, 5:22, 5:19, 5:37 (hill), 5:22, 5:26, :20 (last .08). My Garmin chimed multiple times in the canyon -- indicating that satellite reception had been lost. So who knows how accurate these splits are. But, my total time of 1:08:49 is accurate. I would have taken 4th overall, and 3rd in my age group.

My wife ran the race and PR'd! A great day for her! But no running pictures today, because we both ran.

One last thing. And I apologize for the picture below. Absolutely disgusting, I know. In fact, I hear that Allie almost threw up her cheerios last weekend, while eating breakfast, when she saw the picture of my blisters. Today, I ran in my Asics DS racers (my Nike Lunar Racers I ran in last week gave me horrible, unprecedented blisters, and I've paid for it all week). I lubed up my blisters with vaseline prior to the race. My asics worked well today, but my blisters are MUCH worse, because they had barely started to heal from last week. By far the worst I've ever had. The new, red parts are the worst. I am in a bad way. Ok, enough whining. Sorry again about these pictures. I guess, because I'm a doctor, that pictures like this don't bother me. I'll be sure not to show you these again :)

Nice back to back races Matt and great pics. Maybe you should send them to Nike and ask them to refund your money.

Congrats to your wife too for her PR.

In the time it took me to write this you shrunk the picture. Thanks.

Have you soaked your feet in epsom salt? Judging by how bad those blisters look, you might need to create some epsom salt boots and wear them all day :-)

I think its kind of silly when good runners aren't allowed to run. I can see not giving away free entries, but athletes competing for the podium should at least be given the chance to race if they want to pay for it. In other sports, everyone isn't treated fairly... and I think that's fair!

Good double. Just take a little more recovery than you think you need and you'll be alright. You're running well now, glad to see it.

Yoda...fantastic back to back. Very impressive to see where you are headed shortly...Appreicate all the support and wisdom on the journey back. You are a great friend and mentor. Fantastic effort again today. By the way I counted you and Mike in the overall results. :) oh and you took overall top so no age group place is how they did it...

cheerios last week...and a sandwich today. your feet are disgusting, but at least it's a cool disgusting and a rewarding disgusting.

nice job on the two-in-a-row half marathons, and congrats to your wife.

At least it's not a picture of your butt, which I seem to end up showing a doctor every time I go there :) Hey, Walter doesn't even have to go to the doctor for his butt to show..

Great run, wish I could get up there and join you.

Great race my friend! Perhaps with the blisters i will be able to run with you for a while ;).

So I take it AF half does not have an elite program :-)

It takes some time to get used to downhill running, so I would expect you will not be able to push yourself cardiovascularly in a race like this for some time. Racing down 8% grade takes some practice. It is not quite your normal running but rather a sport that is only somewhat related.

Back in 2001 Craig Lawson and his brother Mark were beating me by a minute and sometimes more in every 5 K, and in proportion in all races up to the half marathon. But in the Alta Peruvian 8 K I finished 2nd behind Craig with only about a 3 second gap while beating Mark. The difference was that after taking a few beatings on downhill courses back in 1998 I trained a lot on the Squaw Peak road flooring it on the way down.

Great race Matt. You looked strong the whole way. I'm glad I was able to con you into running it!

From Steve on Sun, Jun 16, 2013 at 10:40:48 from 66.87.112.92

Great race Matt. Few small bits of advice on the entries since I always do these things last minute. Utah races are much harder to get into, nearly any race in the country will get a half marathoner in with consistent sub 1:10 finishes. Next, get a shirt runners bio done that you can email the director, and keep your Athlinks profile up to date by adding races if they are skipped. Sponsors and serious directors use those sites. Last, tell them you will finish in the top five guarenteed. Top loading is everything.

Dave, Walter does have a problem with exposure...

Have you ever tried to thread your blisters? I have been doing that and it helps speed up the healing. Also, A&D ointment.

Nice race!!

From Matt Poulsen on Sun, Jun 16, 2013 at 17:10:46 from 98.202.242.213

Christie, I'm intrigued. Please educate me. What is threading blisters? Also, what is A&D ointment? (is this similar to antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin?) I'm all ears. I'll try anything. Thank you.

From Christie on Mon, Jun 17, 2013 at 08:32:30 from 74.213.202.246

I use a needle to pull a sterile thread through the blister & then keep it completely covered in A&D ointment. A&D is similar to Neosporin but it contains cod liver oil which I think helps speed up the healing process. It is my magic healing power cream for everything :)

Nice race Matt, especially coming off of UV just last week. Congrats on the PR.

Matt - my defense against blisters is Crocs. For one reason or another I get blisters in racing flats in marathons, but have never gotten them in properly sized Crocs. It might have something to do with the fact that with Crocs you can get away with a little bit of extra wiggle room without the risk of losing the shoe. Or perhaps with the way Crocs deal with accumulating moisture.

From Matt Poulsen on Mon, Jun 17, 2013 at 20:10:33 from 98.202.242.213

All: thanks for the great advice and encouragement!

It's been awesome to see the fitness levels returning to the levels they were earlier this year. You're looking very strong right now and setting yourself up for a great summer and fall for racing.
