So-so race for me.  Not good, not bad.  Didn't feel great, but didn't feel horrible.  I'ts all I had today, though.  My fitness is not phenomenal right now.  I've got work to do.

My splits:  5:22, 5:29, 5:19, 5:28, 5:27, 5:43, 5:36, 5:14, 5:20, 5:29, 5:38, 5:33, 5:10 (Dave Holt was within reach during the last mile, so I had to go for it).

Today showed me that I've lost more fitness (since my surgery 2 months ago) than I thought I had.  Not surprising, though.  The surgery itself put me out of commision for only about 2 weeks, but for some reason it's taken a lot longer than expected to get my body back in sync since then.  My hamstring has been right on the the edge since then, which has certainly affected my training.  And, I've had to keep my mileage low (and have not been able to train optimally) because of it.

But, that's Ok.  My running has felt much better for the past 3-4 weeks, so that is reassuring.  I thought I had a faster race in me today, but I was wrong.  It's just the way it is.  Next time....

Excellent performances today by many others:  Mike, Ben, Steve, Clyde, Dave, Kassie, Bryant (course record), and others.  Fun race.  Perfect weather.

Good job yourself. Not bad for mid-winter race. Keep it up!

Nice job on the race. Glad to see you got to race against some of my St. George buddies Clyde, and Dave.

I figured you were in good shape, but like you said, you're not in hobble creek shape right now, which is ok this early in the year. I think it's an incredible opener on an honest course for this year. You are going to be doing some damage this year!

Awesome race. Wished I'd been down there.

Good run Matt. Nice push at the end!

faster than last year. Can only mean good things. Take care of that hammy!

Nice job Matt. Still a great time and improvement over last year and you may not have been in as good of shape. I hope the hammy cooperates this week.

Not a bad start to the year Matt. You can build from here and have a great year. Nice race!

Great race Matt! A large improvement over last year and a great launch pad for a successful and fun year to come.

A good race considering the bumpy build up. Hat's off for showing up, which is more than I've got to say :-) Looking forward to being part of a killer build up with you and a whole mess of new PRs this racing season.

Thanks, guys.

Nice work all things considered. I am hoping that hamstring settles down and you will have the year you deserve.

From Rachelle on Mon, Jan 20, 2014 at 10:25:21 from 199.190.170.28

Definitely not a bad place to be for the first race of the year. The first race is always a little rusty and you are right where you need to be. Slowly build up that mileage/intensity and your in for a really great year Matt!

From Jake K on Mon, Jan 20, 2014 at 14:58:42 from 199.190.170.28

Be patient w/ it - you're coming around... and the main thing you need to do is stay consistent and healthy through the winter.

From mike⇒nelson on Mon, Jan 20, 2014 at 15:16:55 from 199.127.123.162

Good race Matt. "I've got work to do" sounds ominous for one of your training buddies :)
