Had a decent race. I felt very strong. Just building fitness, and enjoying the process. I love how competive these Winter Series races are.  Weather was great today:  great temperature, occasional winds (but not bad).

There were 4 runners in the lead pack until the turn-around (4.65 miles).  The lead pack consisted of Bryant, Jake, John Coyle, and me. At the turn-around, Bryant made a strong move.  I stayed with him until about mile 5. John Coyle had dropped back a bit. Bryant then gapped the group slightly. I stayed with Jake through mile 6, but I didn't quite have the fitness to continue that pace (miles 5 & 6 were both 5:10).

My 10k split was 32:27

I slowed down quite a bit, but not ridiculously so.  I was very surprised to see John fly by me with a 1/2 mile to go (I hadn't heard any footsteps or breathing; there was a bit of a headwind here, so that may be why). I never looked back once, and in retrospect, I probably should have once just to check where he was. He went by me very fast. I didn't quite have it to catch him. My hat's off to him. I don't remember the last time I was passed in the last 1/2 mile of a race. It's been a very long time. It's good for me though. I learned some things today. Always room to learn and grow. I definitely left it all on the course today:  I was exhausted when I finished!

My splits:  5:17, 5:12, 5:16, 5:15, 5:10, 5:10, 5:24, 5:25, 5:20, 1:43 (.35)

That was a very strong race to go. Way to stick the two 5:10's at that stage in the race that's great! I think you've made really good progress just since the St. George 1/2.

Nice racing Matt. No shame at all in sticking your nose in the race and pushing yourself to the limit. Your splits look very solid. Not far from some spectacular times.

Good run today Matt. You're off to a solid start this year. I was happy to see you up front for that long.

Very strong middle of the race Matt. You looked good

I'm getting more and more stoked for your June Marathon if that still is your plan... Awesome race.

You are always so strong Matt. Good luck with your training. Looking forward to good things this year!

Strong running, Matt. Nothing quite like knocking ~50 seconds off a 10k you ran 2 weeks ago and adding another 5k!

From Fritz on Sat, Feb 22, 2014 at 22:06:14 from 98.202.9.237

Great race Matt! That 10k split was solid and you held on well to the end. I am sure you won't let anyone pass you in the last 1/2 mile ever again.

Yeah I agree with Fritz.

Great race Matt. Stinks getting passed the last 800... But like you said that just gives you room for improvement :)

Nice race and strong run. I have been running with John a bit and he is a very strong runner. Keep up the great work.

Very well run race Matt! I'd say easily your best effort of the year. You are rounding into shape just in time for the main racing seasons.

Sweet time you got there Matt. Keep pressing and moving forward.

Awesome race Matt! You really stuck your neck out and held nothing back. I love that about the way you race. The progress you have made in a year is incredibly impressive.

awesome splits man! Way to hammer down. Looking strong for sure.
