Great workout with Nate, Mike, Kyle, Reed, and Chris (20-mile loop from Nate's home). Flat, honest loop through American Fork and Lehi. After 10k warm-up, Nate, Mike, and I did a 20k workout (1k at marathon pace, 1k at 20-25 seconds slower than marathon pace.... repeat for 20k). Average pace for the fast 1k's was 3:22 (5:25 min/mile pace), but these ranged from 3:19-3:26. Average pace for the slower 1k's was 3:42 (5:57 min/mile pace), and these ranged from 3:38-3:50.

Big workout. Felt strong. Great to work together with Mike and Nate, who are in great shape.

Nice work. Who is the mastermind behind these sessions? You've been doing some very Canova-esque Kenyan style marathon workouts. I like it!

Thanks, Jake. Mike, Nate, and I have put our minds together and decided on certain workouts. Canova has been the inspiration for several of them, including the one today. Nate Clayson is quite the student of Canova's methods. He proposed the workout for today, and I thought it was a great idea. These workouts are not too taxing, but I'm definitely tired when they are done. I can sure feel the right marathon-specific systems being worked with these workouts.

Nate Clayson is a great guy. He just took 4th at the UV marathon. We learned he lives in American Fork, so he's joined us the past few weeks. Excellent and fit runner. He will turn a lot of heads this year.

They're great sessions. Very similar to what I have planned for when I'm ready to start workouts again - 1K up to 5/6K reps. The magic is really in that fast recovery portion - that's where you are learning to keep burning fat instead of glycogen. Keep it up. You got a good thing going.

From Matt Poulsen on Sat, Jul 12, 2014 at 10:43:24 from 50.168.224.197

Thanks, Jake. Yeah, the fast recoveries are something I'm not used to. I'm liking it; you can tell it's probably the most important part of the workout. When you are ready, we'll have to hook-up for some of these workouts.
